Oppositions Season Review: West Ham

Last updated : 25 May 2010 By Dan Buxton

So how has the season gone in your eyes? Was it better or worse than you
expected last August?

It's been a big roller-coaster that's for sure.  Back in August we started
quite brightly on the pitch, despite knowing the there were off the field
issues and the players looked as though they were capable of lifting us to
lofty heights.  Before the end of the year we had rumours circulating that
the club was close to going out of business and players would have to be
sold and I think this affected the team and Gianfranco.  Even once the
takeover had been completed the new owners didn't really give their backing
to Gianfranco and the players and it was a real struggle for them to avoid
relegation.

Who has been your best player over the season? Who has improved the most
during 2009/10?

Scott Parker.  He has been inspirational all season and fully deserves his
call-up to the England squad.  Julien Faubert would be my vote for most
improved player.  His first season was very poor and after a spell on-loan
at Real Madrid the season before, he returned with a point to prove and did
pretty well at times last season.

What was the best moment of the season for your side?

Avoiding relegation, was probably the biggest moment of the season.  Scott
Parker's first goal at the Boleyn Ground for the Hammers sealed a 3-2
victory that left both Hull and Burnley adrift below us.

What was the game of the season?

There aren't many to choose from to be honest.  Rescuing a point at home in
coming from 0-2 down in the second half against Arsenal back in October was
a great achievement.  The 2-1 victory over Aston Villa was one of the best
team performances of the seson.

If you were manager what would you be doing this summer?

I'd be trying to keep my best players, offloading a number of dead-wood and
bringing in some new talent.  Key players such as Green, Parker and Cole
should stay but there a number of players I'd be looking to offload.

Where do you see the club going from here?

It all depends on whom the owners appoint as manager.  At this time, the
club are apparently looking at a shortlist of Avram Grant, Sam Allardyce,
Dave Jones and Ian Holloway.  I must admit, neither of those options fill me
with a sense of glee and I'd be unsure of how we'd progress under either of
them.

Above all, the club needs to have some stability next season and I would be
more than happy with a boring mid-table finish next season.
