Buxton 0-1 Stoke Ramblers

Stoke Ramblers pulled off a superb victory after stubbornly defending an early lead given to them by top goalscorer Lee Jaquiss.

The Ramblers and Buxton, playing the Ramblers home game in Derbyshire to assist Buxton in their search for opponents for a pitch already booked, traded blows early on as the ball flew from end to end but defences from both sides were able to clear the ball before the keeper was needed.

Jaquiss scored the crucial goal midway through the first period when a ball down the middle from centre back Simon Myatt flicked off Chris Cope to Jaquiss, the striker bravely going in and heading the ball over the keeper and into the net for his 15th goal in his 8 Ramblers appearances.

Ramblers had a period of pressure after the goal and Jaquiss, Cope and Myatt all went close to doubling the advantage before Buxton regrouped and started applying pressure of their own.

The Ramblers defence did well to keep their opponents away from goal for the remainder of the half, as Buxton grew in confidence, with only one moment of anguish, when keeper Chris Wollington slid in with the Buxton forward, the ref pointing for a free kick but it appearing for a while as though the official was signalling for a spot kick.

The second half saw more intense pressure from Buxton but Ramblers again did well to restrict them to long shots, Wollington only being called into action to tip over a well struck 30 yard effort and then to save another shot from well outside the box late on, but the defence did well to clear numerous corners and countless attacks.

Ramblers did have chances of their own during the second period, Cope slicing one effort wide whilst Myatt and Taylor both had chances at corners whilst Jaquiss was flagged offside on a number of occasions as he looked to wrap up the game.
