2 years ago today: Whats in the transfer pot?

Last updated : 25 August 2011 By Dan Buxton

Well the clock has just ticked past 5pm and were now officially into the last 7 days of the transfer window, barring a freak snow storm ala February 1st. The Potters have just the one major signing so far in Dean Whitehead and as such only Seyi Olofinjana has been able to leave. This week could see more comings and goings than a series of Big Brother and here is who we have been linked with in recent times:

Goalkeepers

Alex Smithies - Huddersfield - Reported interest a couple of weeks ago. Very highly rated teenager, also tracked by Villa and Everton. Would probably be loaned out if he did sign

Joe Lewis - Peterborough - Another highly rated keeper. Successive promotions with Peterborough, but the team have started this season badly and he may want to move before his reputation is hit by the teams position.

Owain Fon-Williams - Stockport - Welsh international who will probably have to move on from cash strapped Stockport. Probably the cheapest option of the three but also the most risky as having been released by Crewe it could be a good run of form that caught the eye and not an exceptional amount of talent.

Left back

Javier Garrido - Manchester City - Linked yesterday following the Citizens signing of Brazilian Sylvinho from Barcelona. Would add extra quality and allow Danny Higginbotham to challenge for a centre back spot, where he is at his best.

Centre back

Robert Huth - Middlesborough - £5m transfer target, and has been constantly linked for weeks. Battling away with West Ham and Everton for his signature, he seems certain to leave the Riverside this week.

James Collins - West Ham - Another £5m target for the Potters, he seemed close to a transfer last week but it fell away. The Hammers reportedly still have money troubles and so he may be forced out of the door.

Richard Dunne - Manchester City - Linked earlier this summer and now the rumour is doing the rounds again. With Lescott's arrival at the City of Manchester Stadium he may want to move rather than watch Lescott, Toure, Richards and Onuoha fill the centre back berths.

Midfielder

Kevin Anin - Le Havre - Potters are reported to want to sign the midfielder on loan, after his half week trial at Spurs last week.

Sandro - Internacional - Defensive midfielder who at just 20-years-old, Brazilian with very few appearances and commanding a fee around £14m would appear to be a long shot but there have been media reports but Spurs lead the chase.

Striker

Dean Ashton - West Ham - Media reports saying he may have to retire obviously seem to have ended any interest from the Potters. If the reports are in fact over the top or completely not true then the deal may still go through, but it is unlikely.

Kenwyne Jones - Sunderland - £10m rumour that won't go away. Would be one of very few strikers that we may be able be attract who could really improve our starting XI. One striker needs to come in because we're desperately short and Jones, although seemingly a regular at the Stadium of Light, would be a cracking signing that would be worth waiting for
