Burnley, Sunderland and Ipswich have also been interested in the left back come midfielder, but Clarke is happy to have chosen the hammers.

"Out of the three teams promoted, I think West Ham have the best chance of staying up," he continued.

"The manager has already signed some good players and hopefully there's a little bit more money to buy another top striker as well.

"He hasn't promised me anything, he just said he wanted another left-sided player.

"I've been (at Stoke) so long and I wish them all the best but this move didn't need selling to me. It's a big club and it's a great opportunity for me."

Date of Birth: 14th Jan 1980
Position: Left Back / Left Midfield
Debut: 4th May 1999

Clarke first broke through to the first team against Oldham in May 1999 under manager Brian Little when Stoke were in the Nationwide Division Two.

He is a product of Stoke City's Academy and won the 1997 Midland Purity League Cup with fellow academy stars at the time including James O'Connor (who moved from Stoke to West Brom for £250,000 in 2003).

Clive was also a member of the Ireland u21 squad and has made a substitute appearance for Ireland first team. (See Clive's Ireland Career Here..)

Gudjon Thordarson (manager from 1999 til 2002) replaced Clarke with veteran Tony Dorigo in the 2000/01 season where Clarke battled his way back into the team after becoming out of favour for most of the season and has never looked back, being a first team regular ever since.
