Coates says there was never any thoughts of sacking the 29-year-old, who still has 12 months to run on his current contract.
"That's not been considered at all," Coates told reporters. "I am pleased for him in that he hasn't got a worse sentence, and now I hope he can get his career back on track.
"We want him to become the good footballer he can be, keep out of trouble and be a very good professional. He's got all the talent and I am pleased for him that he has the opportunity to get on with his career.
"He's a very good player and I hope he can get his life sorted out."
