But Coates told BBC Radio Stoke: "We've got two of the best wingers [Jermaine Pennant and Matthew Etherington] in the country, they play exciting football.
"There's a load of garbage talked about us and it's just lazy journalism. I don't think we want everyone to play like Arsenal, we'd be bored to death."
Stoke booked their first FA Cup semi-final since 1972 with a
2-1 quarter-final win over West Ham
on Sunday.
"Don't tell me West Ham played better than us, in any aspect of the game," said Coates.
"We absolutely slaughtered them in the first half. We didn't out-muscle them, we out-played them."
The Cup win over the Hammers came a week after
Stoke lost 3-0 at Upton Park,
a result that stretched their winless league run to five games.
However Coates, who is in his second spell as chairman of the Potters, dismissed sections of the club's fans who were calling for manager Tony Pulis to be sacked.
"These radio phone-ins, they drive you off your head some of the things they come out with," added Coates.
"If you took it all seriously you'd be a pretty stupid individual.
"For 20 minutes at West Ham we were really good, then a goalkeeping error gave them a goal.
"What do you do about that? Sack the manager? What planet do these guys live on?"
