Carlo Nash looks set to join the Potters, after being freed by former club Everton.
Nash was in goal as the Potters got promoted to the Premier League in 2007/8, playing the last few months of the season after joining on loan from Wigan.
After gaining promotion he was linked with a permanent switch but the clubs acquisition of Thomas Sorensen cooled interest and, after leaving Wigan, he joined Everton as third choice keeper.
Chances were limited at Goodison Park and his contract was not renewed after the end of last season.
As a free agent he still joined up with the Toffee's for pre-season and has had to fly in from the clubs tour of Australia to sort out a 12 month contract with Stoke, where he will battle it out with Sorensen and Asmir Begovic for a first team spot.
