"Firstly, the match referee dealt with the three players involved at the time. said Tony Scholes
"Secondly, those players were later subject to disciplinary action by the club.Thirdly, the FA had already taken further disciplinary action against Gerry Taggart. Fourthly, the club had never before been charged with a similar offence."
Taggart was sent-off during the first half-of the game on Saturday, October 2, after an incident involving Rangers midfielder Marc Bircham.
He served a three-match ban and was also charged with misconduct by the FA.
Adds the Chief Executive: "We believe we had a strong case to put before the FA and I'm very disappointed they have chosen to penalise us further with what we believe is an excessive level of fine given the circumstances involved.
"The FA appear to have taken no notice of steps the club had already taken, or indeed decisions the FA had already taken.
"We will consider, therefore, whether an appeal is appropriate once we have received full written details from the FA to support the level of the fine."
