Neither side could find the cutting edge to nick the points, as the Tangerines stayed outside of the drop zone on goal difference following results elsewhere.
The home side carved out the first goalscoring opportunity after six minutes, Stephen Crainey whipping in a cross and DJ Campbell heading over the crossbar.
But they survived a real scare in first half stoppage-time when they lost possession and the ball came to Kenwyne Jones, who took it around goalkeeper Matt Gilks as Ian Evatt slipped over. It seemed like a simple finish for the former Sunderland striker, but he somehow contrived to blaze wide.
Keith Southern fired an effort in that took a deflection off his team-mate Campbell and went narrowly wide after the break, before Stoke responded with a swerving shot from Glenn Whelan that Gilks dived to palm away.
