The Royals enquired about the 31-year-old, who enjoyed a four-month loan spell at the Madjeski Stadium last season, at the start of the summer.
But despite the player reportedly not wanting to move his family from the midlands, Hammond is confident he will get his man.
"I've had discussions with Stoke and, as it stands, there needs to be talks that take place between them and Griff," he told the Reading Post. "He still has a lot to think about and right now we just have to wait and see. It's one of those deals that just take time to progress.
"Anything we have to do has to be right for all three parties involved. But we're hopeful of finding a solution. He is their player and it's decided on their time.
"At some point we will have to make a decision if we're going to stay with it - and it's not like we don't have people in the building who can't play right-back. We're happy to wait on this one for now."
