Crewe endured yet another disappointing season as Alex legend Dario Gradi failed to turn around the fortunes of the Gresty Road side and another season of struggle frustrated the Alex faithful.
The fans didn't even have any hopes of a promotion push at any point during the season, whilst first round exits in all three cup competitions, to Blackpool, Stockport and York, halting any possible money spinning cup runs.
After a home defeat to Dagenham on the opening day of the season, three consecutive wins put Crewe in the top seven in the table. That didn't last for long though as eight defeats in the next ten games saw the Alex plummet down the table, a place they would stay for the rest of the season.
A season of runs continued as just one defeat in eight kept Crewe's head above water but they dropped back towards the exit door with one win in eight after that.
Consistency was what Crewe needed, the ability to string a few results together without then having a run of complete opposite proportions, but that continued to desert the Alex as a win, a draw and defeat was followed by a March that consisted of two wins, two draws and a defeat, including a 1-0 win at Vale Park, revenge for the 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture in October.
Crewe needed a point to be safe but were made to wait as they lost four in a row before securing their league status away at Aldershot, courtesy of a 1-1 draw. That prompted Dario Gradi to hand over the reigns to former Nantwich boss Steve Davis and a 5-1 at home to Accrington followed before a goalless draw at play off hopefuls Rotherham and a home Bradford to finish off the season.
