Celtic have been strongly linked with a move for Lawrence with new boss Neil Lennon making the Republic of Ireland international one of his top summer transfer targets.
Lawrence has made it clear that he would like to move to Celtic and has called on the two clubs to thrash out a deal for his signature.
However, Stoke chairman Tony Scholes claims a move is a long way off as Celtic have yet to make an approach for the 28-year-old.
"The situation with Liam is very simple," said Scholes.
"We haven't had any formal approach for him.
"I know Celtic, in particular, have been widely rumoured to be interested in him.
"The only work there has been through agents - there has been no direct contact between the clubs."
