The Potters spent significantly in the summer, splashing out over £15million on Kenwyne Jones, Jon Walters and Marc Wilson, while also bringing in high-earners Jermaine Pennant (on loan) and Eidur Gudjohnsen (on a free transfer).
Manager Tony Pulis remains hopeful of signing Pennant permanently, but the club will not pay Real Zaragoza's £6million asking price. And Coates says there are no major plans to make further additions.
"We have a good squad, so it's unlikely we will be doing much in January," he told The Sentinel. "We have Mama Sidibe coming back from injury so we have a good squad with good cover - it's the best squad we've ever had.
"January is not a great time to buy. I'd prefer not to as you don't want to be signing players under pressure when you tend not to get the best deals.
"People know your circumstances and try to squeeze everything they can out of you."
