The signing was halted late on when the new physio at Anfield said that Mellor wouldn't be playing until November.
"First and foremost he has to get fit and playing again," says Sproson - Mellors PFA Representative. "But if he is up and running by November, then there is clearly a chance Stoke might come back in for him in the January transfer window.
"I've mentioned Stoke to Neil and he is definitely interested. He has asked about the club, so I've told him it is a good club with a great fan base.
"There will be no shortage of takers for a player like Neil once he is fit. Any club in the top half of the Championship would be interested.
"But if it's a loan deal then I think he will want to commute from his home in Cheshire and that could clearly give Stoke a big advantage. But if he doesn't fancy Stoke, then I've told him Port Vale would be a great move."
There must have been some form of comedy intended in his final sentance!
