"In the modern day game," warned Boskamp, "if you play the smaller teams without any respect it always makes it difficult for yourselves.
"I like cup football because we always say it is the shortest way into European football.
"We have to do everything possible to get to the next round.
"I don't know Mansfield, but I have been promised a tape of their game from Saturday to study beforehand."
Steve Simonsen was adding his views on the game ahead. "Mansfield will be looking for a bit of a scalp tonight and we've got to make sure we're up for this one and not having any excuses," he said.
"I remember losing to Oxford and Bristol Rovers when I was at Everton, so I know exactly what it's like to go down to lower league opposition. And of course I was playing when we were knocked out in the first round at Oldham 12 months ago.
"The manager will be wanting to do well in the competition in his first season over here and it's up to us, as players, to make sure we approach things in a professional frame of mind.
"We've also got some tough League games coming up over the Bank Holiday at Crystal Palace and at home to Norwich, so a win at Mansfield will be something nice to take into those games to keep our run and confidence going."
"I just hope we get through this one in the first 90 minutes!"
