Cardiff were another team on the travels and they also lost to a single goal as Gabby Agbonlahor booked Aston Villa a place in round four. Preston had the best chance of getting through, defending a fantastic home record against Tottenham, but a Peter Crouch hat trick helped the London side to the last 16, and a steo closer to a third successive final.
There were three all Premier League ties. Hull were soundly beaten by Everton, the Toffee's progressing 4-0 at the KC Stadium, with both Manchester clubs winning through in tight games, Manchester United defeating Wolves thanks to Danny Welbecks 2nd half striker after Fabio had been given a straight red card in the first half and Manchester City needing extra time to see over Fulham by two goals to one.
