Etherington was at the heart of what was one of the great Potters peformances on Sunday, scoring a brilliant opening goal in a 5-0 semi-final win at Wembley.
The winger suffered cup heartache five years ago when West Ham threw away 2-0 and 3-2 leads against Liverpool before losing on penalties in the last final to be held at the Millennium Stadium.
The 29-year-old is, therefore, determined to do everything in his power to avoid picking up another runners-up medal against Manchester City next month.
"I said to myself after that day that if I get a chance to come back again then I'll take it with both hands," said Etherington, who urged his side to cement their Barclays Premier League status before turning their attention to City.
"We'll look forward to that game and we've got the league to take care of now and get a few points on the board and that'll be us safe and then we can look forward to the FA Cup final."
