The atmosphere was electric as 21,500 people packed into the Britannia Stadium taking advantage of the £5 entry offer. The crowd were behind the team all the way and surely must have played a huge part as that 12th man that Gudjon Thordarson used to talk about.
It started off a tight and scrappy affair, Brighton equalled Stoke and had a couple of chances which our defence did well with. The defence was tight all night and once Stoke got on top of their game, there was no way back for Steve Coppell's men.
At half time Peter Hoekstra; ineffective in this one, and Wayne Thomas; took a knock first half, were replaced by Lewis Neal and Frazer Richardson. These substitutions transformed the game into total Potters domination.
The crowd were excited by some excellent attacking play, Gunnarsson got into the game more second half and he was the one who started the move which led to the goal. Gunnarsson brought it forward into space and gave a terrific ball to Lewis Neal down the left, he brought it towards goal but still down the left wing before smashing in a low cross straight to Greenacre's feet who somehow got in between 2 defenders. He couldn't have missed.
Stoke had to win this game if they were to have any chance of avoiding the drop. As it stands we're fourth from bottom by two points and safe. Unfortunatly we have Ipswich, Sheff Utd and Wolves to play in our next three games. We need to pick up points where we can and perhaps get the lucky break that we need and get 3 points from somewhere.
A great result on a great night out at The Britannia Stadium.
