Grimsby Town recorded their first league double of the season and more importantly sent Stoke City back to the bottom three.
And on the evidence of this match it is the Mariners who look the better bet to maintain their first division status while Stoke must be odds on for a quick return to the second division.
Much had rightly been made of the importance of this fixture and the return to the side of inspirational midfielder Alan Pouton gave Grimsby a massive confidence boost.
From the first kick Alan Pouton was here there and everywhere and looked shattered when he went off 15 minutes from time and while Pouton certainly played his part there were some other terrific individual performances from Grimsby.
Paired together for the first time up front, Mick Boulding and Chris Thompson were an instant hit, both scoring and proving constant thorns in the Stoke defence.
Boulding headed his third goal on his return to the club after three minutes and a fine solo effort from Thompson five minutes from time effectively sealed the points.
Just before this there were some amazing scenes after a challenge from Stoke defender Wayne Thomas on Grimsby midfielder Stuart Campbell led to players from both sides as well as the benches getting involved.
Grimsby assistant manager Graham Rodger was sent to the stands and Thomas was yellow-carded before the game restarted.
Two goals to the good Grimsby conceded territory to Stoke in the second half, but the Potters rarely looked like pulling things round and a bad day got even worse when defender Sergei Shtaniuk was sent off in stoppage time for a foul on Grimsby sub David Soames.
Delighted Grimsby player-manager said: "Getting three points is the most important thing to take out of the game." Stoke boss Tony Pulis commented: "It was a massive disappointment, but not a defining moment in the season as there are still 15 games left of the season."
