Jaded Leeds lost ground on Sheffield United in the race for automatic promotion as dogged Stoke restricted them to a goalless draw.
It left Leeds without a win in four games as Stoke defender Michael Duberry made a happy return to the ground where he played for six years.
The experienced Sean Gregan, back to shore up the Leeds defence in place of Matthew Kilgallon, justified his selection with some superbly timed tackles and clearances but many of his colleagues were below par.
Mid-table Stoke had nothing to play for, apart from pride, but they made Leeds work hard for openings and Stephen Crainey's 30-yard half-volley which flew just over the bar was the closest the home side came to a goal in the opening 45 minutes.
Leeds' running off the ball was poor and at times they were unrecognisable as a side chasing automatic promotion to the Premiership.
Stoke replaced Sambegou Bangoura with fellow striker Hannes Sigurdsson at the start of the second half and Gregan was booked for hacking down the substitute with a tackle from behind.
Icelander Sigurdsson should have opened the scoring in the 55th minute but he shot straight at Neil Sullivan from 15 yards.
David Healy managed Leeds' first shot on target soon after but his 25-yard effort was well saved by Steve Simonsen.
Stoke replaced the ineffective Junior with Dave Brammer just after the hour, while for Leeds Healy made way for former Wealdstone striker Jermaine Beckford and Robbie Blake replaced Jonathon Douglas.
Sullivan did well to keep out a fierce shot from Darel Russell before Leeds sent on Australian winger Joel Griffiths for his debut in place of Eddie Lewis.
Rob Hulse and Griffiths went close to a winner in injury time but Leeds failed to force a breakthrough as Stoke manager Johan Boskamp boosted his chances of keeping his job.
