Stoke never really got out of first gear and were nearly made to pay with the loss of their fantastic recent record against the Baggies.
City missed out the midfield for long periods of the game, getting the full backs to pump the ball into the final third, and looked to have got the points when Rory Delap headed in from close range at the start of the second half. That was shortlived though as Carlos Vela, albeit from an offside position, equalled the scores up in the closing stages before Potters keeper Asmir Begovic pulled off four fantastic saves in injury time to make sure City didn't lose at home to West Brom for the first time since 1982.
Kenwyne Jones was recalled to the Potters starting line up and did well, putting in more effort than of late and trying to roughen up the defence.
The game started slowly and it took 12 minutes for the games first opening as a Pennant free kick was headed back across goal towards Huth, but the big German defender just failed to get on the end of the loose ball and it was cleared.
Jones, as stated above, was looking dangerous and, after winning the balll in his own half, his driving run was halted 25 yards out by a crude challenge from Mulumbu. Pennant stepped up and curled a free kick towards the top corner, and keeper Carson was at full stretch to push the ball away from danger.
It took until the half hour mark for the Baggies to test Begovic, and the Bosnian keeper did well to hold onto the ball from Dorrans low effort, with Fortune looking for an easy tap in.
Both sides had another chance to break the deadlock before the break, Scharner volleying a shot wide on the stroke of half time, just three minutes after another 25 yard free kick from Pennant was whipped over the wall but, with Carson rooted to the spot, the ball bounced off the crossbar and away to safety.
The game was still waiting to click into gear as the hour mark approached, with both sides failing to string more than a couple of passes together, but City did take the lead when a Pennant corner was headed in at the near post by Delap, to send the home fans wild in celebration.
West Brom then stepped up their game, while the Potters were still lacklustre at best, and Begovic was on hand to deny the Baggies three times in five minutes.
The visitors were not to be denied though and Vela struck in the 86th minute, bringing down a cross in front of goal before placing the ball into the top corner. The Potters defence had all stopped and appealed for offside and replays showed that Vela, and another Baggies star, were in offside positions when the cross was hit.
Begovic may have been unable to stop that but he was on hand to deny Albion three times in one go as he dived full stretch to save from distance before springing to his feet to dive at the feet on an incoming Baggies striker, the ball rebounding off Begovic to Tchoyi, 8 yards out and the Bosnian dropping to his right to palm the ball away and allow the defence to clear.
That wasn't it though for Begovic and, after a through ball to Vela split the defence in two, the Potters number one was there to throw himself at the feet of Vela and save the Potters from defeat, saving the shot with his leg.
